Softball Makes Their Way Into The GLVC Championship Tournament

The William Jewell softball team is headed to East Peoria, Illinois along with seven other teams to face off in the GLVC Championship Tournament. Seeding and times were posted by the GLVC league office this past Sunday.

The Cardinals come into the tournament as the eighth and final seed, they will be facing off against Southern Indiana. Southern Indiana comes in as the top seed in the tournament, as well as being ranked No. 5 in the nation. These two teams faced earlier in the year splitting games. The Cards fell to the Screaming Eagles in game one by a score of 8-0. However, the Cardinals would rally back taking game two by a score of 7-6.

The Lady Cardinals’ play seems to be having a positive impact on the school and student body. When I asked student and Senior Jacob Carlisle what he thought about the softball team making the tournament, this is how he responded.

“I think that it is just great that the softball team is getting to represent our school this way. You could say some of the sports teams have struggled this year, so I think that something like this can give the other programs a boost and get them rolling.”

According to the GLVC preseason polls, the Cardinals were not picked to make it into the tournament this year. Hard work and determination has defied the skeptics.

“I’m excited for our softball girls because they are always ready to work and they give their best effort daily,” Head Strength Coach, Gage Rosier, said, “That’s not always the case with young teams. They’ve had a great year so far and I can’t wait to see what they do in the tournament.”

This is a young Cardinal team indeed with 9 of the 18 players being Freshman. This did not affect the Cardinals as they make their 4th GLVC tournament appearance ever.

“We may be young, but we have a group of really talented girls,” Ashlyn Sutton, Freshman Infielder, said, “We believe we can go as far as we want in this tournament. We want to prove the doubters wrong.”

The Cardinals finished the season 25-25 going 14-14 in GLVC play. The team hit a solid .279 during the season and averaged 3.8 runs per game. The game will take place at EastSide Centre Thursday at 10:00 a.m.
